Combat Submission Wrestling, also known as CSW, is the brainchild of Erik Paulson, world-renowned martial artist, fighter, and teacher. The art of CSW is a mix of many different martial arts from around the world including, but not limited to, Judo, Boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Sambo, Greco Roman Wrestling, Shooto, Catch Wrestling, Muay Thai Kickboxing, Savate, Kali, and Silat.
CSW Representative and Lead Coach Will Bernales offers classes at BIMA for beginning and advanced students of CSW. With multiple student levels, the CSW program at BIMA combines the basics of no-gi grappling and striking with more advanced techniques and training drills.
Erik Paulson, who trained Guro Bernales in CSW, has been referred to as a walking encyclopedia of martial arts knowledge. Starting his martial arts career in Judo in 1974, Sensei Paulson quickly expanded his training and competition to other arts. Relocating to California to train with legendary instructor Dan Inosanto, he took to Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do philosophy of learning from as many different instructors as he could. In true JKD fashion, Paulson was one of the first people to branch out and train with the Gracies and learn from the likes of Rorion, Royce, and Rickson, supplementing his already growing arsenal of martial arts knowledge. In the late 80’s, Sensei Paulson began training Shooto with Uri Nakamora and went on to become the first American Light Heavyweight World Champion in Japan. Retiring undefeated after five years, Sensei Paulson adapted his fighting competition experience and martial arts knowledge into a complete system he calls Combat Submission Wrestling. He is now refining and streamlining what MMA practitioners are just now beginning to develop in terms of interfacing striking with takedowns, grappling with striking, and striking with submission. Along with training with some of MMA's most recognized fighters, Sensei Paulson spends much of the year traveling around the world teaching seminars at affiliate academies and gyms.
The Bernales Institute of Martial Arts is proud to host a training seminar here in Salt Lake City with Erik Paulson every year.
