Here at BIMA, we are continuing to expand our youth program in an effort to bring your children the best possible martial arts experience. The Black Belt Club is an exclusive training program for students who wish to go above and beyond the basic Dragons program. Participation in the Black Belt Club is completely optional for your child. Due to the nature of the program, students must have the recommendation of the Chief Instructor to join. General parameters are that students must be at least 10 years of age or hold a green belt or higher. Please know that the safety and security of your child is the single most important factor here at BIMA. To ensure a safe, positive, and injury-free learning environment, students participating in the Black Belt Club will be required to have and bring their own equipment.
The BIMA Black Belt Club also consists of three additional arts/programs: Youth Sparring, Kids' Personal Protection, and Kali/Filipino Weaponry.
Youth Sparring - Sparring has always been an important part of martial arts training. Not only does it give the kids a chance to apply their knowledge and skills in a controlled, positive, and safe environment under the watchful eye of our BIMA youth program instructors, sparring builds self-esteem, timing, coordination, and class camaraderie, and, frankly, it is a lot of fun, too. BIMA kids will be introduced to sparring in a safe, methodical manner, building upon their skills and abilities in such a way as to instill confidence, manage apprehension, and make it a fun learning experience for each of them. Far from just “hitting each other," our program includes challenging motor skill development and targeting games; 1, 2, and 3-step contact drills; sport point sparring; and open free style sparring.
Kids' Personal Protection - Kids' Personal Protection will allow your child to train and utilize their martial arts skills in a dynamic and realistic manner. We focus on self-defense and help your child to identify, avoid, and if need be, apply the physical skills necessary to escape a potentially dangerous encounter. This unique program has been crafted specifically for children in such a way as to promote awareness of harmful situations without creating unnecessary fear or anxiety in your child. Some of the same teaching techniques from our sparring program will be utilized in Kids' Personal Protection with the addition of evade and escape games, conditioning drills, real-world props and realistic situations. Once the techniques have been learned, students will be allowed to apply them as well as all their other BIMA skills at full speed and with full power against a fully-padded, fully-armored BIMA instructor in a safe, controlled setting.
Kali/Filipino Weaponry - Kali is a highly sophisticated and comprehensive martial art from the Philippines. Students at BIMA learn zoning, positioning, and angling movements with single stick, double stick, dagger, and staff. These skills develop coordination, reflexes, sensitivity, and quickness of the feet, all of which help avoid danger and provide awareness of all of the angles of attack. We focus on self-preservation and “counter-offense” in a way that is fun, safe, and exciting. Students will have the chance to practice these weaponry skills with each other in a slow, controlled manner through the use of flow drills and progressions. Eye protection (safety goggles) is required for students participating in weaponry work.
Students who have learned basic Kali skills and drills may be invited to participate in the BIMA Kids Demo Team and may have the opportunity to demonstrate their weaponry skills at cultural festivals and school events.
